Chapter 6: Social Impact Theory

Social impact theory was proposed by Bibb Latane in 1981. It refers to the 3 rules that define how persons can become targets of social influence. In a nutshell, social impact is the result of 3 social forces: source of impact, immediacy of the event, and the number of sources that are exerting the impact. It also states that the more targets an impact has, the smaller the impact of each individual target.

Social impact theory also utilizes mathematical equations as a way of predicting the degree of social impact in certain social situations. Latane describes social impact as the manner in which people affect others in social situations. It is observed in experiences that evoke feelings of embarrassment, humor, and persuasion among others that arise from the behavior of other people.
